Deep retrofitting is remodeling
-
A deep energy retrofit is a major remodel of your home. It is very different from “weatherization” which involves air and moisture sealing and selective upgrading of the existing insulation. With weatherization, the existing building structure and components are largely undisturbed.
A deep energy retrofit (DER) involves reconfiguring all of the critical building components of the home (building shell, insulation, windows & doors, siding, roofing, HVAC, etc.,) resulting in substantial reductions in energy consumption. In addition, a DER must incorporate up-to-date building science knowledge and know-how into the design and execution of the remodel. Also, often a DER involves the design and installation of alternative energy systems. Like any major remodel, it should be approached with a clear plan, budget and schedule. The DER involves the participation of multiple specialized trades that must be selected, scheduled, managed and quality controlled.
Finally, like any major remodel, the project should be managed by an experienced, knowledgeable and capable General Contractor.
